I’ve always been fond of a good bookshop, but since I became a published author, I’ve come to appreciate them even more. Independent shops in particular play a fantastic role, supporting authors and bringing books to readers.
They’re great places to spend some time and discover books you might not otherwise have found.
We’re fortunate in the North East to have some wonderful bookshops on our doorstep. Here are a few you should absolutely visit.
Drake the Bookshop
27 Silver St, Stockton-on-Tees TS18 1SX
As my local independent bookshop, I’m particularly fond of Drakes. They kindly hosted the launch party for my novel and recently welcomed me back for a second event on Bookshop Day.
They stock a wide range of books, from the latest bestsellers to quirky indies and local fiction. You can join their book club or grab a ticket for one of the numerous events they host with authors from Philip Pullman to Tess Gerritsen.
Forum Books
The Chapel, Market Pl, Corbridge NE45 5AW
Forum Books is definitely one of the most Instagrammable bookshops you could hope to visit. Located in an old church in the stunning market town of Corbridge in Northumberland, it’s full of cute and quirky details, including the old pulpit, which is the site of many an author reading (including one from me – reading up above the audience is an interesting experience!).
The team host a wide range of events and stock so many great books. They also have a second store at the Biscuit Factory in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
Book Corner Saltburn
24 Milton St, Saltburn-by-the-Sea TS12 1DG
Tucked away in the seaside town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Book Corner is a friendly and welcoming place to visit. There’s a great range of books for children and you can enjoy regular author events and workshops for writers, before wandering down to the old Victorian pier and taking a stroll along the beach.
Barter Books
Alnwick Station, Wagon Way Rd, Alnwick NE66 2NP
Probably the most famous bookshop on the list, Barter Books is located in an old train station in Alnwick, Northumberland. Home to thousands of second hand books, it’s a great place to explore and pick up something unexpected or unique to read.
